The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Advanced Research ref. 5650G-001 is one of the most technically significant modern Patek Philippe watches because it is not merely a limited edition, but a genuine laboratory watch made wearable. Introduced in 2017 as a 500-piece white-gold series, it marked a major break within the Advanced Research lineage. Earlier Advanced Research pieces were classical in appearance and discreet in the way they concealed their innovation. The 5650G changed that completely. It was the first Advanced Research model in a non-round case, the first in the Aquanaut line, and one of the very few modern Patek Philippe watches to put a new mechanism directly on display through the dial. What makes the watch so special is the fact that it carries two important innovations at once. The first is the new Spiromax balance spring with an inner boss, developed to improve isochronism in vertical positions and allowing regulation to a notably tight rate of minus one to plus two seconds per day. The second is even more unusual: a compliant mechanism for the Travel Time pushers, using the elasticity of steel and leaf-spring geometry instead of traditional articulated parts. Patek Philippe reduced the time-zone corrector from 37 parts to 12, creating a thinner, lubricant-free, wear-free system that remains one of the most fascinating applications of micro-engineering in contemporary watchmaking. The visual design is just as important to the watch’s identity. The blue embossed Aquanaut dial, white-gold case, and matching composite strap keep it rooted in the sporty Aquanaut family, but the aperture at 9 o’clock changes the tone entirely. It gives the watch a sense of exposed intelligence, showing that this is not simply an Aquanaut Travel Time in precious metal, but a watch built to announce a new chapter in Patek Philippe’s research program. Inside, the self-winding caliber 324 S C FUS provides the familiar practical base of the Travel Time complication, while the 45-hour power reserve and 120-metre water resistance preserve genuine everyday usability. That combination of advanced engineering, rarity, and real wearability is exactly why the 5650G-001 is regarded as one of the most important and collectible modern Aquanauts. Offered as a full set, unworn, from 2017.
