The Rolex Submariner Date ref. 1680/8 is one of the great statements of vintage Rolex sport watch design, taking the pure tool-watch architecture of the Submariner and translating it into full 18 ct yellow gold. Its 40 mm Oyster case, black dive bezel, and acrylic crystal preserve the proportions and charm of the classic early Submariner Date, while the yellow-gold bracelet and case give the watch a very different presence on the wrist; richer, warmer, and far more expressive than its steel counterpart. As the first solid-gold Submariner Date, the 1680/8 occupies a particularly important place in the model’s history. The black matte dial with applied gold “nipple” indexes is central to the watch’s identity. It gives the display a distinctive relief and depth, while the Mercedes hands, date at 3 o’clock, and black bezel keep the overall design firmly rooted in the Submariner’s functional DNA. Powered by Rolex’s automatic date calibre from the 1575 family and fitted here on its matching yellow-gold Oyster bracelet, the 1680/8 reads as a vintage Rolex with true dual character; unmistakably a diver in construction, but elevated into something far more luxurious and collectible by its material, dial execution, and period presence.
