The Rolex Submariner Date 16808 from 1984 is the reference that turned the Submariner into a full precious metal sports watch without losing the technical architecture that made the model iconic. It belongs to the first sapphire crystal gold Submariner generation, introduced in 1979, and it carries the calibre 3035 with quickset date, a meaningful functional step versus the earlier gold Submariners. In wear, the 16808 is defined by the combination of a 40mm yellow gold Oyster case, the classic Submariner bezel in aluminium insert form, and a dial that can appear in several period executions, including the raised “nipple” marker style seen on many early examples. The result is a distinctly 1980s Rolex, where material presence and tool watch design sit in the same watch with no compromise in identity.
