This is the classic-line counterpart to Patek Philippe's famous Nautilus cork box. Same era, same construction, a polished chrome frame around a suede-lined interior stamped "Patek Philippe Genève" beneath the Calatrava cross, but here in black leather and an oval shape rather than cork. The silhouette mirrors the Golden Ellipse, and boxes like this accompanied Patek's dress and Ellipse references through the 1970s and 80s.
Vintage Patek presentation boxes are increasingly collected in their own right, sought by owners returning a period Ellipse or Calatrava to a correct, complete set. This example retains its suede cushion and its stamped lining, and shows the honest wear of its age on the leather and chrome.
