The Breitling Navitimer ref. 806 with Venus 178 from 1966 stands among the most important vintage pilot’s chronographs because it captures the model at the point where its identity was already fully formed. The slide rule bezel, the dense aviation scales, and the balanced tri-compax layout were not decorative excess, but part of a watch designed as a serious cockpit instrument. Breitling’s own history places the ref. 806 at the heart of the Navitimer story, and by the mid-1960s the model had become one of the clearest visual signatures in all of aviation watchmaking. In steel, with its black dial and manual chronograph movement, the 1966 ref. 806 expresses that identity in its purest and most collectible form. A large part of the appeal comes from the Venus 178 inside. This movement is one of the great classic manual chronograph calibres of the period, with column-wheel construction, 17 jewels, a beat rate of 18,000 vibrations per hour, and a power reserve of approximately 45 hours. In the Navitimer, that mechanical seriousness is matched by a case and dial design that remain unmistakable more than half a century later. The ref. 806 is not simply an early Breitling. It is one of the foundational pilot’s chronographs of the twentieth century, a watch whose beauty comes directly from its purpose. Offered with its service papers from 2020.
