The American 1921 is one of the most charming designs in all of watchmaking: a Vacheron Constantin first made for the US market in the Roaring Twenties, with the whole dial rotated on the diagonal and the crown set up between one and two o'clock. It was conceived as a driver's watch, so that a hand resting on the steering wheel could read the time at a glance without turning the wrist. This is the rose gold reissue, 40mm, in a soft cushion case with a frosted silvered dial, Breguet numerals and a small seconds tucked between four and five.
Behind the dial runs the in-house calibre 4400 AS, a hand-wound movement carrying the Hallmark of Geneva and offering nearly three days of reserve, visible through the sapphire back. Faithful to a genuine 1920s original, it is Vacheron at its most quietly characterful.
