Some watches are built to be noticed, and this is not one of them. Vacheron Constantin, founded in Geneva in 1755, had made its name on dress watches and complicated pocket watches long before the sports luxury watch arrived in the early 1970s, and the 7811 comes from that older, quieter side of the house. Its dial still carries the full signature, Vacheron & Constantin, with the ampersand that the name had since 1819.

Everything about the 7811 is about being thin. The case is 33mm wide and only 7mm high, a size that was normal then and that slides under a shirt cuff without catching. The dial is champagne with slim black baton markers and a double marker at 9, and two black hands move across it with no seconds hand to disturb the surface. Inside runs the manual winding calibre K1014
