Vacheron Constantin was founded in Geneva in 1755 by Jean Marc Vacheron. In 1819 his grandson Jacques Barthélémi Vacheron took on François Constantin as a partner, and the name became Vacheron & Constantin. Constantin’s motto from those years was to do better if possible, and that is always possible. On this dial the ampersand is still there, in the signature above Genève.
This reference follows the same idea in its design. The 34mm gold case is plain, with straight lugs and a slim bezel, and the silvered dial carries only a small Maltese cross and the signature. The gold indices are inlaid with a black centre, and at 12, 3, 6 and 9 they are grouped in lines to mark the quarters. The hands match them, in black with a gold edge, so that the dial reads in two colours and nothing else. A thin gold hand for the centre seconds sweeps around it, the one moving detail. It is a dress watch from a time when a gold watch was supposed to be worn quietly.
