The Rolex Submariner ref. 5508 was produced between 1957 and 1962 as the successor to the ref. 6538, the same "Big Crown" Submariner worn by Sean Connery in Dr. No. The 5508 introduced a screw-down crown without crown guards, earning it the nickname "Small Crown," and remains the last Submariner reference ever rated to 100 metres before Rolex moved to 200-metre water resistance on later models.
The 37 mm stainless steel case, black dial and Mercedes hands have aged into a warm, even patina here, with the luminous markers and bezel pip taking on the honeyed tone collectors prize on early tool watches of this generation. Powered by the automatic calibre 1530, the watch retains the mechanical simplicity that defined Rolex's dive watches before the Submariner line expanded into date and GMT complications. This example is accompanied by its original box, and combined with its attractive tropical-toned dial, this 5508 stands as one of the most desirable and historically significant Submariner references from the model's earliest generation.
