The 16800 is the Submariner's great transitional reference, made through the 1980s to bridge the vintage 1680 and the modern 16610. It was the first Submariner with a sapphire crystal and with 300m of water resistance, double the 1680's rating, and the first with a quickset date, courtesy of the new calibre 3035. It wears the glossy black dial with white gold surrounds of the mid-decade version.
The character here is in the tritium. The hour plots and Mercedes hands have aged to a deep, warm cream, a rich and even colour set against a dial that has stayed black, while the bezel pearl has softened to the same tone. It runs on the automatic calibre 3035 and sits on the Oyster 93150 bracelet with its diver's extension. This is the kind of patina that only comes with time, and only holds its value when it is original and untouched.
