COMEX, the Compagnie Maritime d'Expertises, was a French commercial diving company in Marseille whose saturation divers worked the deep-sea oil fields. From the 1970s Rolex supplied it with specially marked Submariners and Sea-Dwellers, issued to divers and never sold to the public, each caseback engraved with a COMEX number for the company's own register. The reference 16610 was the last Submariner Rolex ever made with the COMEX logo on the dial, and only around two hundred are thought to have been produced across the model's run, which places any genuine example among the most sought objects in Rolex collecting.
This example is a circa-1991 16610 from the period when these were issued, carrying the COMEX logo on a tritium dial that is correct for its age, the Mercedes-hand Submariner layout and a numbered COMEX caseback. On watches of this importance, originality and provenance are everything, and the strongest examples are those that can be documented back to the diver and the issue records they came from.
