The Omega Speedmaster Professional "Alaska Project" III, ref. 311.32.42.30.04.001, was released in 2008 as a limited edition of 1,970 pieces, commemorating the original Alaska Project prototypes Omega developed for NASA in the early 1970s to protect the Speedmaster's movement from extreme temperature swings in space. Unlike the standard Moonwatch, this edition pairs the familiar Speedmaster architecture with a matte white dial, designed to reflect solar radiation, and comes with a removable red-anodised aluminium thermal shield replicating the original prototype casing.

The 42 mm stainless-steel case, Hesalite crystal and manual-winding calibre 1861 keep the watch faithful to the historic Moonwatch formula, while the white dial with contrasting black sub-dials and Apollo-style chronograph hands give it a distinctly experimental, prototype-driven look. Delivered as a full accessory set including the outer thermal case, fabric straps and steel bracelet, the Alaska Project III is one of the more unusual and historically grounded Speedmaster limited editions Omega has produced, and remains a strong choice for collectors looking beyond the standard Moonwatch reference.
