The Patek Philippe ref. 3960J is one of the most historically important modern Calatravas because it was created to celebrate the maison’s 150th anniversary and, in doing so, became one of the earliest true modern commemorative limited editions from Patek Philippe. Rather than looking forward stylistically, the watch deliberately looked back. Its officer-style hinged back, Bassine case, Louis XV crown, porcelain dial, Breguet numerals, and railway minute track all draw on early wristwatch and pocket-watch design, giving the reference a distinctly old-world character that feels more ceremonial and more romantic than a standard late-twentieth-century dress watch. What makes the 3960J especially compelling is the purity of the concept. This is not a complicated anniversary showpiece, but a restrained and highly literate expression of Patek Philippe’s historical identity. The yellow-gold case and white porcelain dial create a very classical contrast, while the hinged officer back gives the watch an intimacy and sense of occasion that few Calatrava references possess. Inside, the hand-wound calibre 215 PS keeps the watch slim and disciplined, exactly in keeping with the elegance of the design.
