Long before wristwatches were considered practical for men, Louis Cartier built one anyway — commissioned in 1904 by his friend, the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed to read the time mid-flight without letting go of the controls. That square case, with its exposed screws and rounded horns, became one of watchmaking's most quietly radical designs, and the WSSA0039 carries it forward in a fully blacked-out ADLC finish that gives the Santos a more assertive, contemporary presence than its steel-cased siblings. Inside sits the manufacture calibre 1847 MC, while Cartier's QuickSwitch system lets the wearer move between the rubber strap and black alligator leather in seconds, without tools. It's a watch built on a paradox that's aged remarkably well: a shape once considered too bold for daily wear, now one of the most recognisable silhouettes in watchmaking.
