Before the Explorer had its name, it had this watch. The reference 6352 is one of the "Ovettone" or bubbleback Oyster Perpetuals that Rolex used in the early 1950s to develop what would become the Explorer, and it is now known to collectors as a "Pre-Explorer." The link is no marketing story: when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay summited Everest in 1953, it was a Rolex of this family that went up the mountain, and the model that came home to be christened the Explorer.
This 1954 example wears the prized black honeycomb "waffle" dial, its surface textured like fine mesh, with gilt Explorer-style 3, 6 and 9 numerals, dart markers and luminous dauphine hands, in the deep 35mm Ovettone case that gives the model its "little egg" nickname. Powered by the automatic calibre A296, it comes on a leather strap and is accompanied by an additional Rolex bracelet. It is a genuine piece of the Explorer's origin story.
