Rolex introduced the Submariner in 1953 as a tool for divers, and the 5513 became its longest serving reference, made from 1962 to 1989 without a date window. Its dial carries the depth rating in meters first, followed by feet, a detail that was changed when Rolex began printing feet first to suit the American market. Collectors have paid attention to the meters first dials ever since.
This watch has the features that make a vintage Submariner personal. The matte black dial carries tritium markers that have aged to a creamy tone, and the bezel has faded from black to a soft sky blue, which collectors call a ghost bezel. No two watches fade the same way, so the colour is the one thing that cannot be copied. The case is very well preserved and still carries its sharp, pointed crown guards, and the case, dial and movement are all signed. Inside runs the calibre 1520, behind an acrylic crystal, as the reference was made. After more than fifty years, the Submariner is still the diver that every other diver is compared to.
