The Day-Date was introduced by Rolex in 1956 as the flagship of the house. It was the first wristwatch to spell out the day of the week in full in a window, and over the decades it became the watch of heads of state, which is how the half-circular bracelet came to be known as the President. It has been made only in precious metal ever since, and the 228235 is the version in Everose gold, Rolex’s own pink alloy.

What sets this example apart is the dial. It is cut from eisenkiesel, a ferruginous quartz of dark brown colour with red veins running through the stone, a material that cannot be repeated because every slice of it is different. Nine baguette diamonds replace the usual metal markers, and their cut follows the straight lines of the Day-Date, so the stone and the diamonds keep each other in check. The calibre 3255 behind it runs for about 70 hours and carries the Chronergy escapement, and the fluted bezel and the President bracelet are in the same warm gold as the case. It is a rare thing for a watch of this kind that no two of them look the same.
