The Day-Date was introduced by Rolex in 1956 as the first wristwatch to spell out the day of the week in full next to the date, and it has been made only in precious metal since. The President bracelet, which was made for it, gave it its nickname and its place on the wrists of the powerful. The reference 18038 is the fourth generation of the yellow gold Day-Date with a fluted bezel. It was made until 1988, and it introduced calibre 3055, which allows the date to be set quickly, together with the first sapphire crystal on a Day-Date.
This example is dressed in the most classical way the model has to offer, with a champagne dial that is the same colour as the case, applied baton indices and a fine Roman numeral minute track around the edge. It is a watch that explains itself, with the day at ten, the date at three under its Cyclops lens, and nothing else on the dial. One detail is worth knowing if you own one: only the date is quick set, and the day moves forward with the hands through midnight, so it is the day that asks for a little more patience when the watch is reset.
