The Datejust was introduced by Rolex in 1945, in the year of the house’s fortieth anniversary, as the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to show the date in a window at three. The date changed by itself at midnight, which was new, and it launched with the Jubilee bracelet, a bracelet of five links that is still its signature. In 1953 the Cyclops lens was added over the date, which enlarges it about two and a half times.
In the 31mm size, which sits between the small ladies’ watch and the large men’s watch, the Datejust is a watch for everyone. This 178271 is the Rolesor version in Everose gold and steel, with the fluted bezel in gold and the links of the Jubilee alternating between the two metals. The black dial gives the pink gold Roman numerals more contrast than a light dial would, and the VI is set with diamonds. The warmth of the metal and the darkness of the dial keep the watch serious, and the small diamond numeral is the only decoration it needs.
