The Submariner Date 1680 was introduced by Rolex in 1966 or 1967 as the first Submariner with a date, which split the line in two, with the 1680 on one side and the no date 5512 and 5513 on the other. It brought a Cyclops lens to the Submariner for the first time, and it was made for roughly twelve years. In that time the dial changed in small ways that collectors now read like a language, and the most visible one is the colour of the word Submariner, which was printed in red from about 1967 to 1975 and in white after that.
This watch has the white script, which places it in the second half of the decade. Under it the dial is a deep matte black, with a round, triangle and baton pattern of lume plots, and at six it is marked SWISS T < 25, the sign of tritium. Fifty years have turned that lume from white to a warm cream, and the Mercedes hands have followed it, so the whole dial now has one tone. It is the kind of detail that cannot be copied and that tells you more about the watch than its description.
