In 2003, fifty years after the first Submariner, Rolex did something that its divers’ watch had never done: it gave it a green bezel. The reference 16610 in this form was made for the anniversary and remained in production until 2010, when the aluminium insert gave way to Cerachrom. Collectors called it the ‘Kermit’, after the frog of the Muppets. Purists were not convinced at first, because a Submariner had been black or blue for half a century, and it is now one of the most sought after steel Submariners of its generation.
The green is the story of this watch, and it is not a fixed colour. The aluminium insert shifted in hue over the years of production and it changes in the light, so no two Kermits are quite the same shade. Around it sits the glossy black maxi dial, with large lume plots and Mercedes hands that read easily, and behind it runs calibre 3135, which keeps the watch going for 48 hours. It is a Submariner that was made for a celebration, and it still looks like one.
