The Datejust was introduced in 1945, for Rolex’s 40th anniversary, as the first self winding wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial. Eighty years on, the formula has hardly changed. The 16200, made from 1989 into the early 2000s, is the version many collectors consider the last classic one, with a smooth bezel, a sapphire crystal and the calibre 3135 inside.
This 2004 watch has been given a different face. The dial is an aftermarket onyx dial, fully black with nothing on it but the crown, the name and the date window, and it removes everything that usually decorates a Datejust. Without indices to compete, the hands and the date at 3 do all the work, and the effect is closer to a dress watch than to the usual sports Rolex. The original dial, a black dial with baton indices, is included, so the watch can go back to how it left the factory. The 36mm size, the quickset date and the Oyster bracelet keep it as easy to wear as any 16200.
