The Datejust, introduced in 1945, was the first self-winding wristwatch to display the date in a window on the dial, and the reference 1601 represents its fluted-bezel steel generation from the 1960s and 70s, one of the most widely produced and recognizable Datejust references of the vintage era. It carries the caliber 1570, the movement Rolex used across much of its catalog before the caliber 3035 arrived later in the decade.
This 1974 example carries the grey "slate" dial, a color that has taken on a warm, understated patina characteristic of vintage examples, paired with the fluted steel bezel and acrylic crystal typical of the period. Fitted to the steel Jubilee bracelet, it represents a classic, honestly vintage entry point into the Datejust line.
