The Cosmograph was introduced by Rolex in 1963 as a chronograph for drivers who needed to measure speed, and it has carried the name Daytona since 1965. In 2023, for the sixtieth anniversary of the Cosmograph, Rolex replaced the reference 116500LN with the 126500LN, and with it the calibre 4130, which had served for twenty three years. The new calibre 4131 adds the Chronergy escapement, runs for 72 hours and has a column wheel chronograph, and the case is 11.9mm thick, the first Daytona to measure under twelve millimetres.
On the outside, the changes are fine ones, which suits a watch whose appeal has always been in its proportions. The black Cerachrom bezel is thinner and has a protective ring of steel around its edge, the rings of the subdials and the markers have been made thinner, and the white dial now has more space around its three black counters. It is a contrast that Daytona collectors know well, with the hands and indices crisp against the white and the red DAYTONA as the only colour. On the steel reference the case back is solid, so the movement stays out of sight.
