Rolex introduced the Cosmograph in 1963 as a chronograph for drivers who needed to measure speed, and from 1965 it carried the name Daytona. For decades it was a watch that the market overlooked, until collectors took it up in the 1980s and made it one of the most sought after models of the house. Rolex has made it as a chronograph from the start, and for more than fifty years it has been the only traditional chronograph in its range. In 2000 it received its own calibre 4130, the first chronograph movement that Rolex designed and built entirely in house.
The 116505 gives that sports watch a warm face. The case, the bezel with its engraved tachymeter scale and the Oyster bracelet are all cut from Everose gold, Rolex’s own pink alloy that is known for keeping its colour over time. Against it, the pink dial and the chocolate brown subdials set the three counters apart as dark, finely turned discs, a combination that reads like a vintage sports watch in precious metal. The calibre 4130 behind it is built from 201 parts, about a fifth fewer than the movement it replaced, and it runs for 72 hours. Rolex stopped making this reference in 2023.
