The Portofino is IWC's dress line, launched in 1984 and named after the Ligurian harbour town. This is the 40mm Automatic in steel, wearing the version that suits it best: the Milanaise mesh bracelet, a woven steel band that softens the formal black dial and lends it a slightly vintage air. Roman numerals at twelve and six, applied batons elsewhere, a date at three and a red-tipped sixty are the only marks on an otherwise clean face.
Inside is the calibre 35111, IWC's workhorse automatic built on the Sellita SW300, with hacking central seconds and a 42-hour reserve. At 40mm across and roughly 9mm thick, with a domed sapphire crystal and rounded flanks, it slips under a cuff the way a dress watch should. It is IWC at its most versatile.
