The 5496 takes the perpetual calendar somewhere less expected. Instead of the usual three subdials, the date runs along a retrograde arc swept by a red-tipped hand that snaps back to 1 at the end of each month, while day, month and leap year sit in apertures and the moon phase fills the base of the dial. A central sweep seconds, unusual on a perpetual calendar, keeps it reading almost like a simple watch until you look closer. This is the platinum 5496P-001 with the silver opaline dial it launched with at Basel in 2011, so a 2012 example is the original series, before the honey-brown dial arrived in 2014.

The movement is the self-winding calibre 324 S QR, its code spelling out its tricks: S for the sweep seconds, Q for the calendar, R for the retrograde date. It carries the Patek Philippe Seal and tracks the leap-year cycle with no correction needed until 2100, and it can be viewed through a sapphire back that swaps for the solid platinum one supplied with the watch. As on every Patek in platinum, a single diamond is set into the caseband at 6 o'clock.

The watch is delivered with all items shown in the photographs.
