The Nautilus appeared in 1976, drawn by Gérald Genta as a steel sports watch priced like a gold dress watch. Its rounded octagon bezel and horizontal dial recall a ship’s porthole, and it gave Patek Philippe a place in a market it had not entered before. Most of the Nautilus models that followed kept to time and date, which is why the moon phase version stands apart.

The 5712/1A fits an unusual amount on one dial without making it crowded. The power reserve sits at the top left, the small seconds at the lower right, and the date is shown by a hand that circles the outer edge of the moon phase window at the bottom, so the sky and the calendar share one space. The blue gradient dial is embossed in horizontal lines, and the applied markers carry a rose gold frame that picks up the hands. At 40mm and 8.52mm thick the case wears flatter than a sports watch with this much on its face has any right to, and the micro rotor movement can be admired through the sapphire back. Patek’s porthole was designed for a day at sea, and this is the one that tells you the phase of the moon as well.
