Unveiled at Baselworld 2010, the reference 5170 marked a genuine milestone for Patek Philippe: the manufacture's first men's wristwatch built around a chronograph movement designed and produced entirely in-house, ending decades of reliance on outside ébauches. The caliber CH 29-535 PS took five years to develop and, despite its traditional column-wheel architecture, introduced six new patents to the movement.

This example carries a pulsometer scale, "Graduée pour 15 pulsations," around the dial's outer edge, a complication that lets the wearer count a patient's heart rate using the central chronograph hand rather than a stopwatch alone, a nod to Patek's history of doctor's chronographs. The silvered dial pairs Roman numerals at 12 and 6 with baton markers, and the sapphire display back reveals the movement's Gyromax balance and Geneva-quality finishing. Fitted to a navy alligator strap with yellow gold folding clasp, it represents a genuine turning point in Patek's own manufacturing history.

The watch is delivered with all items shown in the photographs.
