The Aquanaut was introduced by Patek Philippe in 1997 with the reference 5060A, a steel automatic of about 35.6mm with a rounded octagonal bezel, an embossed dial and a strap of its own invention, the composite Tropical. It was a sports watch for a house that was known for dress watches, and it found a place beside the Nautilus. In 2007, for the tenth anniversary of the collection, the 5167A followed with a 40mm case, a slimmer profile and the in house calibre 324 S C.
What makes the 5167A easy to recognise is the way its parts echo one another. The raised grid on the black dial repeats in the pattern of the Tropical strap, which is made to resist ultraviolet light, saltwater and daily wear, so the watch reads as one design from the dial to the clasp. The Arabic numerals and the hands are filled with luminous material, and a date window sits at three. It is a watch that was made to be worn every day and everywhere, and it does not ask for any special occasion.
