The Ellipse was introduced by Patek Philippe in 1968, and its shape comes from the golden section, the proportion of 1 to 1.618 that artists and architects have used for centuries. In the following years the house tried the same shape with diamonds, and the 3849 became the classic manual winding Ellipse with a diamond set bezel.
This 3849/17G pushes the idea as far as it goes in white gold. A ring of small diamonds follows the oval of the case, a blue sunburst dial carries only four more at the quarters, and a blue cabochon crown picks up the colour of the dial. Nothing else is printed on it, which leaves the dial reading like a piece of jewellery with hands. The bracelet does the same job, with a textured weave of white gold links that flows straight out of the case, and the signed Patek Philippe clasp closes it like a jewellery clasp. Behind the dial runs the manual winding calibre 215, which keeps the whole watch slim enough to wear without noticing it.
