Patek Philippe unveiled the Golden Ellipse in 1968, and it was the first new collection of the house since the Calatrava of 1932. Its case combines a circle and a rectangle into an ellipse built on the golden ratio, the proportion of about 1 to 1.618 that the Greeks called divine, and the dial has two hands and indices and nothing more. The original movement was wound by hand, and in 1977 it was replaced by the extra thin calibre 240, which winds itself with a micro-rotor set into the movement.
This 3739 is the version with that calibre, in 18k yellow gold with a bracelet made of the same metal. The micro-rotor is the reason for the case being only about 5.5mm thick, which lets a watch with an automatic movement look as flat as a hand wound dress watch. The deep blue sunburst dial changes with the light from nearly black to a clear blue, and against the gold of the bezel and the brick links of the bracelet it gives the watch its character. It was made in small numbers in the 1970s and 1980s, in the years when integrated bracelets were becoming fashionable.
