The Ellipse was introduced by Patek Philippe in 1968. Its shape was drawn from the golden section, the proportion of 1 to 1.618 that artists and architects have used for centuries, and the result is a case that looks neither round nor rectangular but settled somewhere in between. The 3738 followed in 1978, an automatic version in yellow gold that comes on a matching gold bracelet.
The dial keeps to the same logic. Black Roman numerals run along the outer edge and follow the curve of the case, a printed track inside echoes the same shape, and slim blue hands move over a plain white surface with nothing else to read. The bracelet is made of brick links in 18k gold, finished in the same soft brushed tone as the case, so that watch and bracelet read as a single piece of gold. Behind the dial runs the calibre 240, an automatic movement with a micro rotor, which allows a case this slim to wind itself. It is a dress watch without a visible complication, one that depends on its proportions.
