The Rolex Submariner Date ref. 16610 from 2009 occupies a particularly attractive place in the history of the Submariner because it sits at the very end of the long five-digit era. That matters more than it might first seem. The watch still has the proportions that collectors associate with the classic Submariner, with its slimmer case profile, aluminum bezel insert, and restrained overall silhouette, but it also benefits from the maturity that the reference had acquired by the end of its production life. By 2009, the 16610 had become a fully resolved version of the traditional Submariner Date formula, and one of the last opportunities to own that balance before Rolex moved the line into the broader, more industrial ceramic generation. Much of the appeal of a 2009 example lies in that balance between old and new. The watch keeps the black dial, black bezel, sapphire crystal, 300 metre water resistance, and calibre 3135 that made the 16610 such a durable everyday standard, but in its later form it is usually paired with the more substantial solid-end-link Oyster bracelet.
