Louis Vuitton was a trunk maker long before it was a watchmaker. The house was founded in 1854 to pack the luggage of travellers, and it entered watchmaking in 2002 with the Tambour, named after the French word for drum. The case takes that shape, a drum with a deep, rounded profile that sets it apart from the round cases of the Swiss establishment. In 2023 the Tambour was redesigned, with a thinner case and, for the first time, an integrated steel bracelet.

This is the version that suits the new case best. The grey dial is kept quiet: five Arabic numerals at 12, 2, 4, 8 and 10, slim indices, and a small seconds counter at 6 with a snailed finish that catches the light. The missing numerals are what give the dial its character, because the layout leaves room to breathe where other watches crowd it. At 40mm and only 8.3mm thick, with a micro rotor automatic calibre inside, it wears flat and smooth under a cuff. The movement is also certified as a chronometer by the Geneva Chronometric Observatory, which is not what most people expect from a fashion house. A trunk maker has learned to build things that are meant to travel.
