The Reverso was born in 1931, when Jaeger-LeCoultre answered a request from English polo players for a watch that would survive the game. The solution was a case that slides in its frame and turns over, so that the crystal was hidden behind a plain metal back during play. The first Reverso was about 38 by 24mm, production stopped in the 1970s, and it returned with a reissue in 1982. In 2011, to mark the eightieth anniversary, Jaeger-LeCoultre made the Grande Reverso Ultra Thin Tribute to 1931, limited to 500 pieces in pink gold.

The Tribute goes back to the idea of the first watch. The dial carries only the word REVERSO and no maker’s name, it has two hands and nothing else, and the gilt numerals at 12 and 6 sit among baton indices on an opaline white surface. Behind it runs the hand wound calibre 822, which is the thinnest of the line, and the case is only 7.2mm thick. The solid back that the polo players needed has always been a blank for engraving, and this one carries a monogram that refers to the initials MD.
