L. Leroy & Cie is one of the great names of French watchmaking, tracing its lineage to a house founded in 1785 and holding the title Horlogers de la Marine, makers of the marine chronometers by which the French navy navigated. Its cuvette here carries that signature and the Palais-Royal and Madeleine addresses, and the watch comes in its original Leroy fitted box, itself stamped with the firm's Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris Exposition.
The watch is an 18k yellow gold open-face piece of that period, understated in the French manner: a white enamel dial with Breguet-style numerals, a railroad minute track, a subsidiary seconds and a signed movement with lever escapement and bimetallic balance. At 47.5mm and just under 70 grams of solid 18k gold, it has real heft in the hand, and the back cover carries a period owner's monogram. It has been fully serviced and is in working order. Kept with its signed box, it is a matched set of a kind that rarely survives intact.
