The Golden Ellipse has been built around one idea since 1968: an elliptical case whose proportions follow the golden ratio of roughly 1 to 1.618. This is the 5738P, the platinum version launched in 2008 for the model's 40th anniversary in a slightly enlarged case, here with a blue sunburst dial on an 18k gold plate and applied gold baton markers. As on every Patek in platinum, a single diamond is set into the case flank at 6 o'clock, the maison's discreet signal of the metal.
At 5.9mm it is the thinnest watch in Patek's current catalogue, owed to the calibre 240, an ultra-thin self-winding movement whose 22k gold micro-rotor is recessed into the mainplate rather than sitting on top of it. Two hands, no complications, an onyx-set crown, and nothing to distract from the shape. This example is accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming its production.
The watch is delivered with all items shown in the photographs.
