The Golden Ellipse has followed the same idea since 1968: an elliptical case whose proportions trace the golden ratio, close to 1 to 1.618. The reference 3738 is the "jumbo" automatic version, and its significance lies in what drives it. Inside sits the calibre 240, the ultra-thin self-winding movement with a 22k gold micro-rotor recessed into the mainplate, the same architecture Patek still fits to the current Ellipse. This is the reference the 5738 replaced in 2006.
The case is 18k yellow gold and barely 5.5mm thick, with a blue sunburst dial that is itself a solid gold plate chemically turned blue, its applied baton markers and hands in gold. Two hands, no complications, nothing to interrupt the shape. Being a Patek of its period, the movement carries the Geneva Seal.
