The Rolex Explorer 1016 from 1966 is one of the purest expressions of the vintage Rolex tool watch, and this example has exactly the kind of dial that gives the reference its emotional charge. The glossy gilt surface has aged into a deep tropical brown, softening the watch without taking away any of its seriousness. That transformation matters, because the Explorer was never about excess to begin with.
