The Golden Ellipse arrived in 1968 as a case shaped to the golden ratio, and the reference 3589 is its oversized "jumbo" interpretation. It matters for more than its size. Launched in 1970, it was the first automatic Patek Philippe to use the calibre 28-255, the ultra-thin movement built on the legendary LeCoultre 920. That same movement family powers the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, and Patek fitted it to the very first Nautilus in 1976, so this dress watch shares its heart with two of the most important sports watches ever made.
The case is 18k yellow gold with Vendôme-style lugs hidden beneath it, so the watch reads as a pure shape from the front. The blue soleil dial here carries Roman numerals at the quarters, an unusual layout for the Ellipse, semi-incrusted into the dial to reveal the gold beneath, while the sigma markings confirm solid gold for the hands and indexes. It is a quietly confident piece of 1970s Patek design.
