The roots of the Baignoire lie in a design that Louis Cartier first made in 1912, and in 1958 it took the soft, rounded oval that we know today. At a time when almost every watch was round, it was a bold departure, a case without sharp corners that rests on the wrist like a pebble. The name is often taken to mean bathtub, though the opera boxes reserved for important guests are the likelier source, which suits a watch that was always meant for evenings out.
The 3064 is the small Baignoire in rose gold, and its charm is in the restraint. The silvered dial with its fine sunburst finish carries large Roman numerals that follow the curve of the oval, so that they lean in towards the centre, and two blued sword hands move across it. The crown is set with a cabochon. Everything has been left out except what a Cartier needs to be recognised, and the result is a watch that looks as modern as it did when the oval was new.
