The Patek Philippe Calatrava ref. 2526 with first-series enamel dial is one of the great milestones of post-war Swiss watchmaking, combining the elegance of the classical Calatrava with the technical significance of Patek Philippe’s first self-winding movement. Its yellow-gold case is broad and beautifully proportioned for the period, with a flat bezel, downturned lugs, and a screw-down back that give the watch a stronger, more architectural presence than many mid-century dress references. At roughly 36 mm, the ref. 2526 already feels unusually modern in scale, which is one of the reasons it has remained so important to collectors. What defines the watch above all is its enamel dial. On these earliest examples, the applied markers are pinned through the fired enamel surface, creating the subtle dimples and construction details that distinguish the most desirable dials of the reference. Combined with the subsidiary seconds layout and the depth and permanence of enamel, the result is a dial of unusual richness and durability. Inside, the calibre 12-600 AT gives the watch its full historical weight: a 30-jewel automatic movement with Gyromax balance and heavy gold rotor, finished to a level that has made it one of the most admired early automatic calibres ever produced. In this form, the ref. 2526 is not simply an early automatic Calatrava, but one of the defining vintage Patek Philippes; elegant, mechanically important, and exceptionally complete in concept.
