Breitling developed the Cosmonaute in 1962 at the suggestion of astronaut Scott Carpenter, who needed a way to distinguish day from night while orbiting the earth, where a conventional 12-hour dial offers no such reference. Carpenter wore a modified Navitimer with this 24-hour dial aboard the Aurora 7 capsule, making it, by most accounts, the first Swiss chronograph in space, ahead of the Omega Speedmaster's later flight the same year.

This example carries the black 24-hour dial with the twin-plane Breitling logo, slide-rule bezel, and column-wheel Venus 178 movement typical of the reference. Fitted to an olive canvas strap, it's a piece of genuine aerospace watchmaking history rather than a design merely inspired by it.

The watch is delivered with all items shown in the photographs.
