The Fifty Fathoms was introduced by Blancpain in 1953, at the wish of Jean Jacques Fiechter, a diving enthusiast who had become head of the house, and of Bob Maloubier, a founder of the French combat swimmers, whose national suppliers could not give him what he needed. It had a bezel that could be locked to track the time under water, a double O ring crown, automatic winding and a black dial with luminous markers, and it is widely seen as the first modern diver’s watch. The Bathyscaphe followed in 1956 as a smaller, civilian counterpart with a date, and in 2013, for the sixtieth anniversary of the Fifty Fathoms, it returned at 43mm with a ceramic bezel and the original case lines.
This 5000 is the Bathyscaphe in Sedna gold, a Swatch Group alloy of gold, copper and palladium that is made to keep its red colour. The blue sunburst dial changes with the light from deep navy to bright blue, the applied markers are in the same gold, and the seconds hand ends in a luminous lollipop with a red tip. Behind it runs calibre 1315, with three barrels for five days of power and a silicon balance spring that is not magnetic, so the case needs no soft iron cage and the movement can be seen through the sapphire back. A blue sailcloth strap with a pin buckle in Sedna gold keeps the watch light and casual on the wrist.
