The Royal Oak Offshore began in 1993 as a 42mm statement of strength, and three years later Audemars Piguet showed that the idea could also be worn with restraint. The reference 25807, issued from 1996 alongside the 25808, is an Offshore of 38mm with a triple calendar in a case barely 12mm thick. Around six hundred examples were made in steel.
The most characterful part is how the calendar is read. Day and month appear in small windows, while the date is told by a slim hand with an arrow tip that travels along a ring at the edge of the dial, a nod to the Model 5516 of 1955. The dial of this watch has aged to a deep chocolate brown, with an amber warmth in the squares of the Tapisserie and around the small seconds, a change that no new dial can imitate. Inside runs calibre 2127/2827, a self winding movement of the 11½ ligne family.
